On Saturday June 4, 2009, the fire engine donated to the Zapata by the Alamosa Fire Protection District was delivered to its temporary home in a building across Highway 150 at The Nature Conservancy.
The pale green “Pumper #1” is waxed, refurbished, and ready to tackle any fires in our area.
Board member, Jerry Grandey, has been instrumental in seeing this project to completion by keeping in close contact with the fire district and making arrangements with The Nature Conservancy for temporary storage until our Fire House has been funded and constructed.
Joe Funk, Chairperson of the Physical Improvements Committee, will place signs to direct firefighters to the temporary storage building and the fire engine.
The Fire Committee reported at the July 17, 2009, ZHA Board meeting that the Alamosa Fire Protection District would like for the Zapata Homeowners Association to own our future firehouse and the land on which it is built. The Fire Protection District would still be the host organization for any funding received for the construction of the firehouse.
The Fire Committee hopes for funding from Federal Stimulus Grant money. This grant is scheduled to be decided in August, 2009. This funding may come with a deadline date, so if we receive it, there may be a timeline to finish. There is also grant funding from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs which could be used as well. The Fire Committee has a building plan ready to go if and when the funds become available.
Fire mitigation grants might also be forthcoming for homeowners from the Colorado Forest Service in the near future. Thanks are due to our Fire Committee members!
