Lightning starts fire at Zapata

August 15, 2009 – Fire Protection, Zapata Zephyr

Details from Jack Zeman

Recently there was a fire started by lightning on the Zapata subdivision. Several homeowners, Bill McCowen, Jack Zeman, and Dan Curtis, spotted smoke from County Road 6N.

They called 911 and Mosca Hooper Fire Department. The fire was somewhere between Cub Creek Place and Cub Creek Circle.

Mosca Hooper Fire Department had a good response, first with a 4 wheeler and water packs to pin point the spot. They got a tanker and a small pumper within 100 yards of the fire. Fortunately there was no wind, and a persistent drizzle kept the fire down. It was burning hot at the base of a large ponderosa pine, and a slash pile beneath the pine was beginning to spread.
