Fire Danger

Open Fires on the Zapata are prohibited at anytime, we are due for some thunderstorms and the potential for lightning strikes starting fires, following any storms be observant and call 911 immediately if you see smoke or fire. 

Due to the extremely dry conditions,

Alamosa County has enacted a FIRE BAN 

Under fire restrictions, campfires, outdoor grills, other open fires, smoking in some cases, fireworks and the use of torches with open flames would be prohibited.

Violations of fire restrictions would constitute petty offenses that could be fined up to $1,000.

 

Emergency Fire Restrictions at Great Sand Dunes

Rio Grande National Forest Fire Restrictions

Starting June 20, Stage 1 fire restrictions which prohibit:
1. All open fires, campfires, or stove fires unless in an established fire grate in a developed campground. Petroleum-fueled stoves, such as propane grills and white gas camping stoves are allowed.
2. Operating an internal combustion engine, such as a chainsaw, without a spark arresting device properly installed and effectively working.
3. Welding or operating an acetylene or other torch with an open flame.
4. Smoking, unless within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.
As always, the use of explosives and incendiary devices, including fireworks, are prohibited on federal lands.

Fire Restrictions on BLM Lands

MONTE VISTA – The San Luis Valley Public Lands has initiated Stage 1 fire restrictions on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management within the San Luis Valley  BLM-managed lands are now in high fire danger.”

Stage 1 fire restrictions prohibit:
1. All open fires, campfires, or charcoal fueled broilers unless in an established fire grate in a developed campground.
2. Smoking, unless within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.
3. Possessing, discharging or using any type of fireworks or other pyrotechnic device including sparklers.
Cooking stoves and other appliances fueled by liquid petroleum or bottled fuel that are equipped with a valve which allows the operator to turn the flame on and off are permitted.
